FAQ

FAQ

What types of books do you publish?
We publish all categories of fiction and non-fiction in English and Spanish.

Where can I order your books for my bookstore/library?
All of our titles are listed with Ingram’s and many are also listed in Baker & Taylor, Blackwell, and Bertram Books. We offer a higher discount for bulk orders made directly through Paraguas Books and paid for in advance with a credit card or wire transfer. For questions on direct bulk orders, please send an email with “bulk order” in the subject line to kim@paraguasbooks.com.

Do you charge publishing fees?
Paraguas Books is not a self-publishing company. We therefore don’t charge our authors for reviewing their manuscripts or editing and publishing their books. Paraguas Books pays our authors royalties on their book sales.

Does Paraguas Books pay advances?
We have great reasons for not paying advances. We’ve all heard stories about traditional publishers shelling out millions in advances to celebrities and well-known authors. With so much money at stake, traditional publishers tend to push the books they’ve doled out high advances on, leaving lesser-known writers largely on their own. We prefer to share the “risk” with our authors, allowing us to focus on publishing quality work and then giving authors the biggest part of the profits from their book sales.

How does my book go from manuscript to published title?
Accepted manuscripts follow this journey: copyediting, design, proofreading, and publication. Copyediting fine tunes your text, making sure it’s consistent and grammatically sound. A graphical artist designs the book cover and lays out the inside pages. Once the book has been layed out, the author carefully reviews it, taking the responsibility to correct any and all copy errors. A final proof is made and the author again reviews the text, taking note of and approving final revisions before the book goes to print.

When will my book be published?
Paraguas Books normally publishes the book of a contracted author within 6 months of the contract’s signature date.

Where will my book be sold?
Paraguas Books lists all of our titles with Ingram’s and other catalogs referenced by professional book buyers (book stores, librarians, etc.). Our titles are currently available worldwide via online shops and at these booksellers: Amazon, Barnes&Noble, BetterWorldBooks, Diablo Rosso, Foyles Bookshop, and Powell’s Books. All of our print books can also be purchased via the Espresso Book Machine (please note that new titles can take up to 6 weeks to appear in the Espresso database). See a list of Espresso locations here.

How can I get maximum exposure for my book?
Authors play an integral role in the marketing of their books. Since authors are always the “face” of their books, they can (and should) use a variety of means to spread the word. A few examples could include social marketing, reaching out to reading groups, organizing a reading at a favorite bookstore, and contacting local media. Paraguas Books takes advantage of digital tools and social networking. Please note that we don’t allocate precious resources to advertising in or sending printed review copies to the major media.

Where is Paraguas Books located?

Our management office, in Latin America, is centrally located in Panama. Please note that we do not accept manuscripts or inquiries by mail. See our Submissions guidelines.
